Why broadening your job search doesn’t work

Geschreven door Heidi Los

Be alert if you find yourself willing to do any job – Job search tips included.

Read on if you want to know why broadening your job search doesn’t work!
Finding a job and start working as soon as possible is what a lot of Expat Partners are striving for. For some, it’s their biggest wish. They really want to start right after settling in in the new country.

When they start their job search they feel like being flexible will lead them to a job faster.
The opposite is true.

The job opportunity of your partner was calling.

Your partner’s career step was or is the main reason of you living abroad.
The main reason why you quit your job.
First, you decided and then you moved abroad.
After using some time to get adjusted to the new place, you slowly started seeking employment.

Now, you realize your job search takes you longer than you expected.
You feel trapped.

Open to any job

By the time you feel trapped you open up for any job.
Probably, you think that is smart and will lead you to job opportunities faster.
It seems like being flexible and open.
As a result, you will find yourself in a long time struggle to find a job.
I will explain what happens if you broaden your job search.

Job search tips

These are the top 6 reasons why you shouldn’t broaden your job search:

  1. It will drive you away from what you really want to do.
  2. Searching for something which isn’t true to your destiny will not be serving you in a positive way.
  3. In the end, you will have less experience.
  4. Or even worse, you will be addressed as overqualified for the job.
  5. Recruiters will not identify you as their best option for multiple reasons.
  6. Your job search will take a lot longer than you wish or maybe never end.

Instead, narrow down your job search

I would rather invite you to narrow down your search.
First, think about what you really want.
Let that be your main focus.
What is it that you want to do in your next job?
Really. What is it?

Dare to narrow down and focus just on that.
You will find more enthusiastic recruiters and hiring managers.
They will see you as their perfect match for the job.
Your experience and enthusiasm will lead to an interview sooner or later.

Having trouble narrowing down your wishes for your next career step?
You are not the only one.
Take some time to find out.
Look for help if you really have no clue what it could be.
If you are able to narrow down to a specific wish, you will soon find out that it makes your job search easier.
When you know what you truly want, the chances of your job search will increase immensely.
Read on to see the job search tips.

This is why narrowing down makes your job search easier:

  •  More dedicated.
  •  More connected to what you are good at.
  •  More energy to press on.
  •  People around you will remember you more easily.
  •  People around you believe you and it’s easier for them to support you.

Are you still persuaded to broaden your job search?

Sit down and feel what it is that you really want to do.
Just think in chances, don’t think in impossibilities.
Think big.
Then speak out loud what it is that you want.
Let the world know.
Finally, see what happens.
