Expat in Eindhoven?!

Geschreven door Heidi Los

Many Expat families are living in Eindhoven and there are more to come.  Eindhoven is expecting the big number of 50.000 Expats in Eindhoven in 2020! Are you considering moving to the Netherlands?  You have to know about this place called Eindhoven…  Are you already Expat in Eindhoven?  Let us know, are you as enthusiastic as I am about Eindhoven?

Living in Eindhoven, not as bad as I thought it would be…

Moving to the Netherlands, after living abroad, Eindhoven was not really on my list of places to go to or live in.  Instead, Eindhoven turned out the be a very good city.  For me and my family, it is actually a great place to live. Being Expat (or repat) in Eindhoven is not bad at all.  I’ll explain why.

Eindhoven: different perspectives…

Eindhoven as seen from the underground bike parking with the brand new (2017) Student Hotel in the back.  Bike parking? Yes.  BIKE parking.  Get used to it.  You will see bikes everywhere and all the time.  Jump on a bike yourself, explore the city and the beautiful green areas in and around Eindhoven.  You will love it as much as I do!

Expat in Eindhoven?

To be honest, when I first found out that we possibly had to move to Eindhoven, I wasn’t happy at all.  After living in The Hague for almost 12 years I  moved to beautiful Vienna where I lived for 3 years.  I wasn’t looking forward to Eindhoven.  At all.  Even the idea of living in the Netherlands after 3 fantastic years in Austria was really disappointing to me; I mean really disappointing! In my mind, Eindhoven would not be much of a rich city in terms of culture or beautiful scenery.   The architecture would be miserable by comparison.

I was wrong

This city turned out to be a great place to live for multiple reasons. Here are just a few:

  • first of all, it’s the city of technology
  • more relaxed than the other 4 bigger cities in the Netherlands
  • it has a big international community
  • a lot of open and friendly people
  • a big number of multinationals and smaller (startup) companies
  • it is the city of design
  • it is the heart of creative people (which has a positive impact on all inhabitants!)
  • there’s a lot of green to be seen (compared to other cities in the Netherlands)
  • in many ways, it’s very accessible
  • close to Amsterdam, Belgium, and Germany
  • it has good and a huge variety of restaurants
  • finally, we have BIG yearly events like Lichtjesroute, Glow and the Dutch Design Week!

What else do you need in a city?  This is, by the way, why we moved back to Eindhoven for the second time after we have lived in the US.
