Expat life as an Expat Partner can be really nice and stressful at the same time.

Especially when you are the partner of the working International.

Many Expat Partners have to stop working when they cross borders.

They have to give up, or at least pause, their own career to make the transition possible.

Some like it and yet many Expat Partners want to return to their job, at some point.

The fact that your own career is on hold for a while, is frustrating for many Expat Partners. How is that for you?

You are at the right place if you are living abroad, and you want to live a meaningful life again.

A career coach for Expat Partners?

To become a happy Expat Partner, having a career is not always the solution. Some Expat Partners just want to take care of their families, that is totally fine too! It's OK to do so, but be convinced about your choice, and be proud of this decision too. With your head up in the air.

Fear for your career?

Geschreven door Heidi Los

A lot of Expat Partners struggle with their own career.
They fear for their own career.
Following their partner’s employment choices often leads to a dip in their own career.
Do you fear for your career?
It doesn’t have to be that way!

Hey Expat Partner, how are you?

I talked to an Expat Partner the other day.
She’s happy and has quite a lot to do during the day.
The only problem she’s having is that her day is completely filled with activities for the family.
She herself is always last on her own “to do” list.

Following her partner’s career is a choice made a long time ago, but the feeling of getting behind makes her anxious.
She often feels like her career has taken a backseat to her partner.

They both went to University…

Both studied at the university and both succeeded in their first job.
They had children, moved abroad, and now she feels way behind in her career.
This is what the difference looks like:

Fear for your own career?

Choices made

She made the choice to accompany her partner for his work.
She’s experiencing a rich life while living abroad.
Rich in a way that living abroad is full of surprises.
It’s like studying at the
University of LIFE.
But having a poor career for herself is always in the back of her mind.
Do you find yourself having the following internal dialogue?

‘I would like to work, but I don’t know how to actually combine it with our current lifestyle. The feeling of being out of a work situation for such a long time is stressing me out. Deep inside I know I want to boost my own career, but I don’t know where to start. I don’t know if I dare to take that big step to a career again. We have to change a lot in the way we have organized our lives’.

What is the way?

Is there a way?
Am I able to combine living abroad and a career abroad?
Will I be able to add new energy to my life?

Yes, it is possible.
There are many ways to work on your own career.
Set aside the stress or fear that is weighing on you.

I have coached many Expat Partners and they all found their own unique way to boost their careers.

  1. Deciding if you really want to work again. Once you’ve made the decision, you are able to get what you want.
  2. Searching for what you want to do, develop, learn, study and contribute to your current possibilities. You set yourself a goal for the (near) future.
  3. Building a network that supports you in the goals you want to achieve.

You are not too late, yet!

You don’t have to fear for your career, but don’t wait for help to come.
If you fear for your career, get into action.
Get some help because I don’t want you to turn your back on your life abroad and move back home.
If you really want to get things done for your own career, get going.
Make it happen.
