Who’s calling you forward?

Many Expat partners really like the idea of not working.  They’ve had a busy career themselves and they love to not have that for a while.  They give all of their energy to the move and to managing family life.  I think that’s good, but I also believe there is an expiration date on living this kind of life.  I discovered that I need both.  My own life and career deserves as much attention as taking care of the family and my partner’s career.

As an Expat partner, it is very important to be aware of your own fulfillment in life; to think about the way you want to spend your days.  The reason is that you are responsible for your own personal development, for a life that is meaningful, for your own career.

A lot of it has to do with positive self-respect:

  • You are not only a partner of…
  • You live your life in a way that fits you
  • You use your talents
  • You develop your talents
  • Besides taking care of others, you take good care of yourself
  • You give your life purpose
  • You keep growing
  • You literally open the box
  • You give yourself a valued position in the family

There is more to why you should be increasingly aware of your own needs and be aware of your own daily life:

  • Your family will feel the benefit of the energy you will get
  • You show your children – and others – that you are able to live a fulfilled life wherever you live
  • You are living to the max!

Do you live to the max?  I am aware that many Expat partners think that they live to the max while living abroad, but they don’t listen to their needs in the long term.

Who’s calling you forward?

Read the story of Sandra, one of my clients:

“I did quit my job, in which I was very successful and happy.  The new job of my partner was the reason why.  I became manager of the household, taxi driver to my children and very active for the school of my children.  I thought I was quite happy, but it always felt like ‘not really the thing for me’.  It brought me a to-do list, but didn’t give me the satisfaction in life I needed.”

Sandra couldn’t feel satisfied because she didn’t listen to her inner voice and inner wisdom about her own needs in life.

If you recognize yourself in the above, think about what you need right now.
