Getting ready for your new job while living abroad?

Let’s work on your LinkedIn Profile, CV, Networking skills, Strategy, and your Interviewing skills, in 5 steps.

My name is Heidi and I have lived and worked abroad as a coach for Expat Partners. I used to work as an HR professional and I love it when people live their strengths especially when they feel like living a meaningful life.

While living abroad I always felt the urge of having something meaningful to do in my life. I was always busy creating something which I liked doing, using my skills and a good balance between taking care of the family and the work I did.

My life was very dynamic and I felt totally alive, each time I lived outside the Netherlands.

Don’t think I got that feeling overnight. Not at all, it took me at least a year to find out what I needed and wanted in the new situation. I didn’t do it all by myself too. I was walking around with this undefined feeling for a long period and at that moment I bumped into my coach. I wanted to be able to answer the little voice inside me saying: what is in it for you my dear? What about your career? The thing I struggled most with was that other voice screaming voices: hé, we need you now! You cannot go out there to find a job. You are needed here! Stay home and take care of the household and the family! We need you!

The struggle I felt was big because I realized I couldn’t and didn’t want to work full time. That was ‘impossible’ with the lives we lived the way we did. Of course, we could hire a full-time nanny but that didn’t feel good either. My husband was traveling a lot. I had two small children but yet I tried to find something in the end. So it was easy not to listen but that little voice inside me was pretty persistent.

Getting back in a normal daily routine takes a while. I found out that there are three phases:

Phase 1: focus on the move

You are busy arranging the move, getting things done are high on the list of priorities, just to make sure everything and everybody gets in place. You find out about a lot of things like food, doctors, schools, living in another culture, etc.

Phase 2: the new normal

You know your way around in the new country, you’ve made friends and buying errands is not costing you a day anymore. Your children have made new friends and so did you. You have moments of ‘what shall I do next’ and you also questioning yourself about your daily activities.

Phase 3: the next step

In this phase, you are getting more and more signals in life about your wish to do something meaningful in life. Some will find a job or hobby right away; most have to work on it. I mean work a lot on it!

Most Expat Partner experience a lot of PEAK moments in life. If you live abroad you know what I mean. Besides all the great stuff you are exposed to some Expat Partners experience a sort of loss in life:

  • They miss the routine of the day.
  • They miss the feeling of being something else than a partner or/and a parent.
  • They miss the office gossip.
  • They miss their colleagues.
  • They miss using their brain.
  • They miss using their skills.

Do you miss something of the above?

If you are an Expat Partner and you really want a job in the new country, this could be something for you. I can offer you support, depending on your need you can choose from this packet.CV check

The biggest issue most of the time is the language, the not knowing the work culture, not having a proper network to get an introduction to the company you like to work for. As an Expat Partner is looking for a job you are facing a lot of new -but to overcome- challenges.

The way to finding a new job is sometimes a long, long road. Some give up after a few attempts. Some strive for the maximum, some are open for everything, others step into the first given opportunity.
